Dr. Carl is the Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Business Analytics and an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics and Management Information Systems in the College of Business at Governors State University. She received her Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona in 2014. She published a pioneering article related to video game streaming and online learning in Computers in Human Behavior in 2017 that has been cited over 100 times. She has presented her work at international and national conferences and received a best paper award at the Hawaii International Conference of System Sciences in 2018. She is currently pursuing innovative research at the intersection of video game design and problem-based learning.
Katherine currently teaches graduate level Business Analytics, Data Visualization, and Information Management, as well as introductory Management Information Systems and Database Management at the undergraduate level. She has taught Java, C#, and Python programming, as well as Social Network Analysis, Systems Analysis and Design, and Operations Management. She has received several teaching awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the James F. LaSalle Teaching Award.
Dr. Carl has experience teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level both face-to-face and remotely in asynchronous and synchronous formats. Her online teaching toolkit includes the use of Sony Vegas Pro editing software, Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), and YouTube Studio. Katherine is a member of the Decision Sciences Institute and the Association for Information Systems. She serves as a track chair for the Information Systems & Technology and Special Topics tracks of the Midwest DSI conference and as a reviewer for several journals and conferences in her field.
In her spare time, Dr. Carl enjoys singing and playing the piano, reading, video games, and hiking. She is an avid supporter of the arts and participates in local community musical theater. She lives with her wonderful husband and their dogs and cats in the suburbs of Chicago.
